Yormii prototype line-up… Not quite as many as Dyson

Millmii development prototypes

Millmii development prototypes

The photo shows a timeline of development for the Yormii salt/pepper grinder – which we’ve named Millmii. The first prototype was a very basic mock-up made from acrylic tube and some canibalised parts from an existing salt and pepper miill. I tried and tested various iterations; dual compartment, wings with rollers, gearing to make the grinding easier, many different refilling methods… but it just didn’t seem right. The wings of the mill just didn’t look right. Consumer testing showed that people really didn’t know what to do with these wings – and all this was brought to discussion during the second Incub board meeting. That meeting prompted a drastic re-think, and during a brainstorming session a day or two afterwards with the Ideas and Innovation team, we came up with a solution – encircle the product in a rubber band! This solved many problems, it transformed the Millmii into a functional, designer item that we can now see has great potential in the market.

James Dyson made 5127 prototypes of his revolutionary vacuum cleaner. Yormii in comparison has only needed to make a small box-full during the development of our first product to be manufactured in Sheffield, Millmii - But revolutionary? Maybe… It came to my senses recently that actually there are only 3 or 4 salt and pepper mill classes; normal twist grind, rasp/squeeze, battery powered ….. and now Millmii, which is used by rubbing between the palms of your hands. We have created a brand new, completely unique and distinctive grinder in a class of its own!

You can see the final design by following this link to Millmii.

Here’s a shot of me in the factory standing in front of the injection moulding machine that Millmii will be manufactured on. A 100 tonner named Charlie based here at Load Hog’s world class Hawke Street facility. We’re at a very exciting stage and I can’t wait to start manufacturing, and building an international Sheffield kitchenware brand, Designed and Made in Sheffield, UK! What’s more, an employee owned, UK manufacturer!

Yormii is now ready to start pitching to retailers – so if you are a retailer and interested in stocking Yormii products such as the Millmii salt/pepper grinder, please get in touch – sales@yormii.com.

@Made Festival Make your ideas come to life offer

Incub are offering the opporutinty for an inventor to work in Incub to develop the concept for a period of up to four weeks.

This is a really exciting opportunity.

SpinCycle – I’ve Moved

Thanks to everyone who followed the SpinCycle development process on here over the three week period I spent at Gripple.

I will be continuing to work closley with the I&I team but if you would like to keep up to date with the latest developments I will now be bloging on the new SpinCycle Project site…

Frontline Forensics NuCAST180 nearing launch

Since starting in March this year Frontline Forensics Ltd is thrilled to have progressed as far as it has. We started out looking into the footprint casting process at crime scenes. There was a clear need for development in this area so during the first few months we set about searching and testing a number of alternative materials that could do the job better.

We are now pleased to be in a position to offer NuCAST180, a quick setting footprint casting kit for law enforcement agencies. NuCAST 180 is currently being trialled by West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire police. We are also in talks with Essex, Derbyshire and several other forces who will hopefully also be trialling in the near future.

NuCAST180 eliminates a traditional, messy and complicated process that takes footprint casts in a minimum of 25 minutes and replaces it with an all-in-one kit which offers a no mess, no fuss 3 minute casting solution.

Frontline Forensics Ltd also has a number of other product development ideas in the pipeline including clever evidence packaging solutions and further developments for tool casting on vertical surfaces. We hope that NuCAST180 will pave the way for building relationships with police forces to be able to offer them cost savings and innovative solutions to outdated methods and equipment.

Our next step is to monitor the trials in Yorkshire and continue to start additional trials in further counties around the country. If the trials are a success we could be looking for a launch (and our first sale!)  mid to end of October. Fingers Crossed!

SpinCycle – it works!

So…today was my last day of a 3 week – create a working cycle powered – transportable – washing machine device for the developing world challenge.

I felt like this was an ambitious task from the start but I had no idea when I started this process how much I would actually achieve in the time frame.

Thanks to some great advice and guidance from the I and I team and a considerable amount of sweat and elbow Greece from myself, I have achieved my goal of making a working SpinCycle.

But not only this…I have also filed a patent which I have been working on alongside the making of the prototype which means that I can now fill you in on the developments and show you some photos of the device being demonstrated to the I and I team earlier today.

The process to be performed in the developing world would be:

SpinCyclist pulls up to the clients house…

The First SpinCyclist

The Frame is rotated into the washing position…

Engaging the wash drum

Water, soap and clothes are added…

Puring the water

Grating the soap

The bicycle is pedaled to spin the drum and agitate the dirt out of the clothing.

A wash and a rinse cycle is performed before the clothes are hung out to dry…

Washing the clothes

The frame is pulled back into the transit position and the SpinCyclist Cycles on to the next client.

Transit position

So there it is. Thanks to everyone who has supported me and advised me through the development of this product.

Although this is the end of my concept proving stage it is still very much the beginning of a long road. I plan to build a revised model which I can take out and test in Africa in the coming months and I’ll continue to update the blog as the project develops.

SpinCycle – Cracked it!

This week has been a busy but very productive one.

On Monday night I decided to change the design before meeting the welder in the morning to build the working prototype. This isn’t recommended however, I seem to have pulled it off as on Tuesday I helped Fred (Ashurst’s welders and fabricators) build the frame and piece it all together. I even had a little ride around the workshop then and there!

I put some finishing touches to the model before showcasing it to the Gripple team on Thursday. Everyone seemed exited and impressed at the results of a 10 day operation and where fully convinced of the concept after having a spin themselves.

Unfortunately, I can’t fill you in on any design details or show you any photos for a couple of weeks or until I have filed a patent. just in case so cheeky scum ride off with my ideas. But what i feel I’ve achieved with Gripple and the I&I team is something very innovative, simple and now very appropriate for the developing world.

I’m looking forward to sharing more design solutions and developments as they occur in the project in the next few weeks.

SpinCycle – week 1 complete

Throughout my first week working with Gripple and the ideas and innovation team I’ve been developing a design for the first working prototype, in order to prove the concept of being able to cycle from A to B and transport a device which allows you to effectively and efficiently wash clothes, using pedal power, with the bike in a stationary position. This would allow an entrepreneur in the developing world to cycle to different clients houses and wash their clothes for them. The micro enterprise would be run in a similar way to a window cleaner in this country.

The design has evolved and re-evolved into many different forms but I now have a simple and elegant solution to the problem.

On Friday I produced a wooden construction to test out the frame design which I am proposing for the welder and fabricator to make on Tuesday.

In week 2 I’ll be refining the design and building the frame, for the device.

Keep following to see how I get on…

SpinCycle – meeting the experts

Today saw a very important stage in the SpinCycle development process. I met with a welder and fabricator and an in house cycling fanatic to discuss how the initial-recycled bike-SpinCycle-working prototype could be made.

One of the biggest developments is that the tricycle is now going to be a quad bike! it will still be pedal powered so don’t worry I’m sticking to the original plan, I’ve just added a wheel back on to the arrangement which makes the device more like a two wheeled trailer for a bicycle.

I have also decided to make the wash drums top loaders instead of horizontal loaders to allow more space to get the clothes in and out as well as avoiding scraping clean clothes on the dirty tyres.

These to developments along with some finer structural alterations made today very successful and made me one step closer to making a working model.

An additional bonus was the Hot Pork sandwich from Rosie’s. Siriously recomend it!
